New Samvat 2026: AMFI Chief Reveals Why Staying Invested Matters More Than Timing
AMFI CEO Venkat N. Chalasani shares his investment advice for the new Samvat, explaining why long-term discipline, SIPs and portfolio reviews matter amid market volatility and uncertainty.
Chalasani said investors should avoid making panic-driven decisions during periods of market volatility and uncertainty. Instead, they should focus on their financial goals and investment horizons. Maintaining a long-term perspective and continuing investments with discipline play an important role in navigating market fluctuations.
Sharing insights from his more than 40 years of experience in the financial sector, Chalasani recalled that when he began his career in 1996, global uncertainty and inflation were also among the challenges facing financial markets. During his career, he witnessed several major disruptions, including the IT bubble, the 2007-08 global financial crisis and the COVID crisis in 2019. These events demonstrated that uncertainty is a constant feature of financial markets and investors must remain prepared for it.
Staying Invested Matters More Than Market Timing
Explaining the importance of long-term investing, Chalasani said the most important consideration is not when an investor enters the market but how long they remain invested. Market fluctuations are inevitable, but remaining invested over the long term can help investors benefit from market growth.
He also highlighted the need for investors to understand the difference between market volatility and risk. While fluctuations are a normal part of financial markets, the actual risk lies in how potential investment losses could affect an individual's financial goals.
According to Chalasani, investors should review their portfolios periodically and avoid becoming overly concerned about short-term market movements. Instead, they should assess their investments in the context of their financial objectives and investment horizons.
SIPs Help Investors Maintain Investment Discipline
Chalasani said long-term investors have benefited from remaining invested in the market and following a disciplined investment approach. A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is an important tool for bringing discipline to investing, offering several benefits by encouraging investors to put money into the market regularly.
He urged investors not to make hasty decisions based on prevailing market conditions and stressed the importance of remaining disciplined in their investment approach.
India's Growth Story Offers Multiple Investment Opportunities
Despite the challenges facing financial markets, Chalasani said India's growth story remains strong. He pointed to renewable energy as one of the sectors offering significant investment opportunities.
He also highlighted several factors supporting India's growth, including its demographic dividend, controlled inflation, stable interest rates, rising consumption and increasing participation by retail investors.
Chalasani said the expanding financial services sector and the growing financialisation of savings and investments are also creating new opportunities. He encouraged investors to maintain confidence in India's growth journey and continue participating in it.
Mutual Fund Industry Focuses on Strengthening Investor Confidence
Discussing AMFI's responsibilities, Chalasani said the organisation continues to conduct investor awareness programmes to help more people understand mutual fund investments and make informed financial decisions.
He revealed that approximately 6.35 crore investors are currently investing through mutual funds. However, the industry's objective is not limited to increasing the number of investors. It also aims to ensure that they become informed investors with a better understanding of financial products and investment decisions.
He said investor confidence, transparency and technology are extremely important for the mutual fund industry. AMFI and the wider industry are working to maintain investors' trust while promoting financial inclusion.
A New Beginning Does Not Always Mean Starting a Fresh Investment
Chalasani emphasised that a new beginning does not necessarily mean starting a new investment. In many cases, it can mean remaining committed to an existing investment strategy and continuing to follow the financial plan already in place.
On the occasion of the new Samvat, he urged investors to pursue their investments with clear objectives, remain disciplined and responsible, and look beyond short-term market fluctuations.
He expressed hope that the new Samvat would bring prosperity, financial well-being and fresh opportunities for every family. He also said it could mark a strong beginning towards making India more financially secure.
